Retro-style games rarely work for me unless I can see it working on a classic platform, and Void Prison falls in that category.

While it would have been difficult to achieve — it’s a twin stick shooter — Void Prison nevertheless has a vibe of Exodus (Firebird, 1984) along with any number of retro shooters you can name set against a black background. And while you’re in control of a humanoid character rather than a spaceship, it seems to do all the classic shooter things, with a few extras besides.

What is Void Prison about?

This is a pretty straightforward concept — the arena shrinks as you combat enemies. Here’s the synopsis for Void Prison:

Void Prison is a fast paced, endless arcade twin stick shooter that puts you inside of an ever shrinking ring. Survive by fighting emerging enemies around you and don’t get consumed by the void. Complete achievements to unlock new skins and powerups and get on top of the leaderboards! All for the cost of one coffee.

Here’s the trailer:

Void Prison‘s features are listed as:

  • Endless arcade gameplay
  • Twin stick controls
  • Collection of unlockable skins and powerups
  • Simple but impactful pixel art and effects
  • Balanced gameplay loop that will drive you to improve with each run
  • Competitive and rewarding mechanics
  • Collection of various and unique enemies
  • Legendary dodge roll
  • World and Friends leaderboards
  • Various achievements

But where can you play this game? Released by Indie publisher Untold Tales and developer Lazy Flock, Void Prison is available to buy now on PlayStation 4/5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X|S, and has been out on Steam for a couple of years.

Most significantly, however, is the price. This indie game is available for an insanely low $2.99, or £2.69 in the UK. Putting that into context, that is less than the price of a cup of coffee (I mean, I make my own, but that’s beside the point). You can support an indie developer’s thrilling new game (I’m loving the soundtrack in the trailer) for less than a Starbucks and not regret it later.

(I mean, it’s not just me who hates Starbucks these days, is it…?)
