We Are Stardust C64 Game Hidden in Vinyl LP

With the release of LukKash’s “We Are Stardust” C64 fans are thrilled to find a game hidden in the album. A few years ago, LukKash were remixing C64 game music.

Their latest release, “We Are Stardust” is on vinyl and has a Commodore 64 game stored in the grooves. A new video from 8-Bit Show And Tell demonstrates loading and playing the game.

LukHash’s new record “We Are Stardust” contains some great Retrowave music, but also has a Commodore 64 game by Megastyle stored in the vinyl grooves. We look at how to load this game on a real Commodore 64, and give it a play.

There are several different ways to play We Are Stardust (The C64 WASD game). You can connect a record player to your C64 and play it from vinyl, or find the secret WAV file on the CD (available from Bandcamp). Once extracted, it can be converted intoa TAP file to run on a C64, or in an emulator (e.g. Vice 3.5 or later).

To load the game on vinyle, you’ll obviously need a copy of the LP, along with a record player. The data is routed to a C64 using an MP32C64 cartridge. This isn’t really a cartridge, as it actually connects to the cassette port. The MP32C64 allows you to load files stored on other devices, from CDs and phones to anything you can connect with the included 3.5mm cable. MP32C64 can be tricky to get hold of, but you should be able to find an MP32C64 device on eBay. Meanwhile, unassembled MP32C64 carts can be found on eBay if you’re handy with a soldering iron.

The We Are Stardust C64 game is an endless runner coded by Jamie Fuller with graphics by Roy Widding. This isn’t the only example of C64 games being hidden in vinyl. Check 8-Bit Show And Tell’s playlist for more, and check megastyle.itch.io/we-are-stardust, too.
