A Game Boy Color OutRun clone has been developed, and its developer is happy to talk to SEGA…
A few weeks ago, an OutRun clone for the GBC was unveiled by developer Shane McCafferty, titled “What If Outrun.” Early versions were available to play via Itch.io, but these have now been pulled.
Since then, development of the game (apparently using GB Studio) has continued, and on Monday, September 1st, the finished OutRun GB will be available to download free for the Game Boy Color and Analog Pocket from McCafferty’s Itch.io page.
Original article:
One of the best experiences of going to the local arcades as a kid was to play OutRun, preferably the version that looked like a stubby Ferrari. I think it’s fair to say that none of the ports and conversions I played on computer or console quite lived up to the original experience.
So, I’m always a bit dubious about OutRun clones (and sequels, since Turbo OutRun), but in all honesty, this is a bit of a surprise.
As you can see, Shane McCafferty — @EGVroom on X — is making Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, which you can buy for just a couple of dollars on the EGVroom itch.io page. The difference is, the other titles are original, whereas What If OutRun is clearly a clone of a popular game owned by a gaming giant.
So, it’s free.
A look at the GBC’s OutRun clone
You can download this OutRun clone to play on your GBA with a suitable SD card reader cartridge or in an emulator. Or you can do what I did, and play it in your browser.
I’ve captured this video of gameplay, which inexplicably didn’t record the audio. However, the audio sounds great for a low-spec conversion.
As you might have gathered, I’ve played a lot of OutRun over the years. Nothing beats the original, of course, but what this clone has is the feel of the classic OutRun game. Unsurprisingly, the graphics are a step down, and the audio is limited. But if there was ever an official OutRun clone, it has a tough act to follow.
Fancy playing? Perhaps you can record it with the audio? Head over to the EGVroom itch.io page to grab your copy and browse the full library of Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles.
