It’s been 17 years since Half-Life 2 hit the shelves, and countless gamers across the US and Europe sat hunched over their PCs for hours waiting for the Steam installer to connect to the registration server.
The intervening years have been kind to Half-Life 2, with two follow up chapters (or “episodes”) and the successful VR jaunt, Half-Life: Alyx. There’s also been the revival of the original Half-Life using the modern Source engine, known as Black Mesa, and now Half-Life 2 itself gets the modernization treatment with Half-Life 2: Remastered Collection. Currently listed on SteamDB, HL2: RC is a new project by HL2UP modder Filip Victor. Half-Life 2 – Update brought the game to current gen graphics standard:
Presumbaly, HL2: RC takes this concept further. The problem, however, is that there is quite a bit of competition in this area. Various update mods with modernised textures and new backgrounds have been developed in the intervening years, which leaves us wondering just what the Valve-approved Half-Life 2: Remastered Collection can bring to the table.
Until it’s time to wake up and smell the ashes again, we’ll keep an eye on HL2: RC.
