World Mario Day is coming! On March 10th (Mar10, geddit?), we celebrate everyone’s favourite plumber, and what better way to do so than by diving into the classic games that have defined generations? But which Mario titles truly stand the test of time?

A recent study, digging into Metacritic scores, has revealed some fascinating insights into how both critics and players rate the iconic Mario series. And, as it turns out, there are some pretty big differences!

Player’s choice: Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2

It seems nostalgia reigns supreme! According to the research, Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 is the most beloved Mario game amongst us, the players. This gem, originally released on the Game Boy Advance, boasts a stellar 9.4/10 user rating. It’s not just us, though; critics also gave it a solid 91.5/100. With over 5.6 million units sold, it’s clear this portable adventure struck a chord.

Critics’ darling: Super Mario Galaxy 2

When it comes to the critics, Super Mario Galaxy 2 takes the crown. This Wii masterpiece achieved an outstanding 98/100 from the pros, and players aren’t far behind with a 9.3/10. With over 7 million copies sold, this intergalactic adventure is undoubtedly a modern classic, and one of the best selling games on the Nintendo Wii console.

The most divisive title: Mario Strikers: Battle League

But not all Mario games are created equal. The study also highlighted the most divisive title: Mario Strikers: Battle League. This Switch release has sparked a fierce debate, with critics awarding it a 70.2 average, while players have given it a rather harsh 3.9/10. Ouch!

Why the differences?

As Hekima Yoshida, Main Editor for OnlineKajino.com1, points out, “Older games often have the advantage of time, allowing them to build better public opinions and develop a sense of nostalgia, even if their graphics and gameplay may be less advanced.”

It’s true! Nostalgia plays a massive role in how we remember and appreciate games. But it also shows how opinions can differ, even within such a beloved franchise.
