The original team behind Ecco the Dolphin has confirmed it is getting back together to remaster the original games and being a new, modern third instalment.

Undoubtedly one of the best-looking games of its era, Ecco the Dolphin rode the waves (!) of the burgeoning movement back in 1992.

Back in January, Gematsu spotted that SEGA had revived its trademark for Ecco the Dolphin, which appeared on the Mega Drive/Genesis, Game Gear, and Master System (among many other platforms).

Meanwhile, the website www.eccothedolphin.com is displaying a counter, which appears to be ticking down to a date in April 2026 (25th or 26th). At the time of writing, this timer is showing 8101:31:18, which appears to be counting down in hours and minutes.

Ecco the Dolphin: looks good, shame about the playability

I remember people raving about this game when it first came out. It graced magazine covers, you could even play it in shops. None of this put people off buying it… it’s as if the difficulty level didn’t become apparent until you got the cartridge home!

When I tried it, there was nothing intuitive about the game, just a lot of swimming about. I believe there is a space/alien level (or levels) which is probably worth seeing, but for the most part, this game is not for me. It had a sequel, The Tides of Time, and the Ed Annunziata-lead dev team has promised a third new game.

Then again, Ed wanted a movie a few years ago, so…

However, if SEGA is bringing back Ecco the Dolphin, along with various other SEGA classics, we’re hoping there is at least an attempt to improve the original…
