80s/90s game development legends Tony Warriner and Stoo Cambridge are collaborating on UrbX Warriors, launching on May 28th as a Kickstarter. The game is planned to release on the Spectrum Next and PC.
I’m a big fan of crowdfunding, although I can’t really think of any that I’ve backed that have turned out to be particular successes. I’ve supported a few tabletop games, and they’ve been fine, as have the comics, but a few failures have transpired along the way. I backed a phone that was a complete disaster; a 3D printer that never materialised; a motorized standing desk that never popped up… oh, and cast iron pan with grill lid that is my absolute go-to in the kitchen.
That one is ace.
But video games? Never backed one yet, but I might be about to with this offering.
What is UrbX Warriors?

Not much is known about the game at the time of writing. There will be a virtual launch party at 19.30 GMT on the 28th, and the Kickstarter tells us:
UrbX Warriors has been designed by Tony Warriner (Beneath a Steel Sky and Broken Sword) and legendary pixel artist Stoo Cambridge (Sensible Soccer, Cannon Fodder).
We have drawn on all our industry experience to produce this, our most challenging project to date! This is an arcade adventure game that pushes the Spectrum Next’s advanced hardware to the limit, paired with just one more go arcade gameplay to captivate players.
As Warriner started off on the original ZX Spectrum, it makes sense that he should return to the Z80 chip at some point. Meanwhile, Cambridge’s art is one of the defining icons of the Amiga 16-bit era, with his characters embellishing Sensible Soccer/SWOS, Cannon Fodder, and Sensible Golf.
The game’s title suggests a shooter, whereas the screenshots indicate something a little different.
Could it be an adventure, or even an RPG?
