We’ve all tried Raspberry Pi retro gaming at some point, but it can lack some of the authenticity of the original hardware. Sometimes it’s the basic set up (perhap the wrong Pi model is being asked to run software it physically can’t) and sometimes it’s the chosen controller. It can even be the display configuration.
Aiming to tackle all three of these issues is the REVOCADE, a Raspberry Pi 4-based mini retro gaming arcade system, resembling (but much larger than) the TAITO Egret or SEGA Astro City Mini devices. Featuring interchangeable controllers, the REVOCADE also has a preinstalled Raspberry Pi in ABS injection molded casing, so no assembly is required. A 1:1 IPS display is also part of the build, making the device suitable for standard landscape games as well as vertical shooters.
REVOCADE’s interchangeable controllers are a standard arcade-style joystick, a trackball and paddle (described as a “spinner”) and a racing wheel with foot pedal. These controllers cost extra to buy with the basic REVOCADE, but appear to be available individually. They’re also compatible with PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
With high quality stereo speakers, adjustable volume dial, and a choice of marquee artwork, the REVOCADE casing provides access to the Pi’s Ethernet port, SD card slot, and two USB 3.0 ports. The controllers connect to the main table-top arcade system with four pogo-pins and a USB port.
The REVOCADE specs are as follows:

- Weight: about 30 lbs (for the starter edition)
- Screen: 17″ diagonally (view area), IPS display, with full viewing angle
- Resolution: 1024 * 1024, 1 : 1 aspect ratio (view area)
- SOC: Raspberry Pi 4B (4G RAM)
- Ports: USB 3.0 * 2, Ethernet, Micro-SD card slot, and power adapter port
However, be warned: the basic REVOCADE is $499, currently around £400 at the July 2022 exchange rate. Individual controller units cost $59-$79 (£47-£63). All in all, this is an interesting Raspberry Pi retro gaming system, albeit an expensive one.
