A new retro-style platformer game in the works has its own Kickstarter page and has already received over 500 backers. The game called Windswept could be landing on contemporary consoles in the near future.
Windswept is described as “A ’90s-inspired platformer about a duck and turtle finding their way home. Coming to your favourite console + PC.” Having exceeded its £9,792 goal with £17,405 (converted from AU$), the game’s charmingly pixelated 2D aesthetic seems to be accumulating some anticipation. Being a collect-a-thon platformer revering the “good old days”, its inspired by the likes of Donkey Kong Country 2, Super Mario World, Yoshi’s Island and Celeste.
In this tag-team and “casual-friendly” experience, you can play as Marbles the duck or Checkers the turtle and control whichever character you choose to lead while the other follows behind you with each having their own distinct abilities. There will also be an option for co-op play with a friend. There are over 40 lush and detailed stages to play through and the ability to unlock further challenges by obtaining different types of coins and finding secret modes along the way.
The creator WeatherFell (aka Jayce) describe the story of the game:
“You are a newly-hatched duckling swept away by a storm – with no idea where home is, you set out on your journey and also discover the secret behind the events leading up to the storm in the first place.
Windswept’s story is simple and light-hearted because it’s about your own experience and how you choose to approach your challenges.”
WeatherFell is aiming to launch this game on Steam, Epic Games and “all major consoles” including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox. It has 25 more days to get its last supporters on board so if this game has picqued your interest, there is no better time to back Windswept on Kickstarter.
