This is exactly the kind of retro-modern hybrid that hits my sweet spot. Publisher Meridiem has announced they are bringing Dinopunk: The Cacops Adventure to Steam on November 24, 2025, and this one looks like a pure injection of colorful, 2D Jurassic action.

Developed by The Dude Games, this platformer is all about capturing the golden age of 2D platformers, but with updated graphics and modern gameplay.

Dinopunk: Alex Kidd meets Contra with ninjas…?

The game’s pedigree is right out of the ’80s and ’90s playbook. It’s set in a pixelated world full of pop culture nods and directly pays homage to classics like Wonder Boy, Alex Kidd, and Contra. That’s a fantastic trifecta of influences, blending exploration, charm, and action shooting.

You take on the role of Cacops, a charming amphibian dinosaur, on a quest to recover his stolen egg. Naturally, this involves facing off against ninjas, unique enemies, and colossal bosses.

Here are a few key features that really make this stand out:

  • Shooting and Reloading: The combat is built around Cacops using water projectiles that require recharging. Accessing special items will enhance these attacks, adding a strategic layer to the classic run-and-gun platforming.
  • Arcade Minigames: This is a brilliant touch. The inclusion of hidden extra challenges, specifically mentioning surfing waves in true California Games style, adds massive variety and boosts that arcade nostalgia factor perfectly.
  • Retro Aesthetics: It promises a visual style full of nods to the myths of the ’80s and ’90s, which is exactly what we want from a game that aims to be the ultimate 2D platforming experience.

With its lighthearted tone, unique dinosaur protagonist, and blend of classic charm with modern controls, Dinopunk looks like it’s going to be a fun, nostalgic ride when it hits Steam next month, so wishlist it now — it might even work on your Steam Deck!
