Further details of the upcoming retro style Rugrats platforming adventure game have been releases.
Set to launch from this March on all major platforms including Switch, the throwback 2D platformer is even getting a release on the NES.
Based on the titular ’90s cartoon series, Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland will see you join favourites Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, and Lil as they embark on a journey of imagination and wonder inspired by classic NES titles. The retro vibes look to be a proper trip down memory lane.
As reported, the story follows the babies after they see a commercial for a new Reptar video game, then imagine themselves inside a game. The six stages take place in the Pickles’ residence, but after an initial screen, the stage transforms into a more fantastical setting.
You can make your way through the game on your own, or with a co-op partner, great for those who want to introduce younger players to the series. Either way, you’ll be meeting some classic Rugrats characters such as Angelica, Cynthia, Spike and even Mr Boppo, the punching bag clown, as you work your way through the levels.
Not only that, but the game will allow you to toggle the visuals between classic NES-style 8-bit pixel art and a modern HD hand-drawn style that takes you straight back to the iconic Nickelodeon TV show.
Features in include the ability to explore six stand-alone levels across the Rugrats’ make-believe interpretations of the world, each filled with secrets, challenges, and bosses from their cartoon world. Hop across ice blocks at the Ice Cream Factory (the fridge), venture into the Night Oasis (the sandbox), and brave the Haunted House (the attic). “Weave through obstacles in high-speed chases, take down powerful bosses or revel in creating the most destructive path possible as Reptaur.”
You can also swap between the four babies, each with distinct abilities and mechanics: help Chuckie overcome his fears by jumping up high, or call up Phil to dig holes faster.
Developed in a collaboration between The MIX Games, Wallride and Limited Run Games, they will be distributing actual NES copies of the game via Limited Run Games, for those who want to relive the old days. Pre-orders for these physicals will be available in the coming weeks.
The trailer, which even has nice touches such as a chiptune version of the title card jingle, has provoked a range of opinions, with people either loving or hating the ‘old school graphics’, Many enjoyed the freedom to choose, but seem to have strong preferences as to which they selected between the HD or 8-bit mode. Many felt the gameplay invoked memories of Mario Brothers 2.
Fans are asking what is next in the pipeline, if this is only the first 90s Nickelodeon TV show LGR mentioned?
The classic Nickelodeon cartoon, which premiered way back in 1991, has had as many as 19 video game adaptations since. The last Rugrats game to launch, however, was Rugrats Munchin Land on PC back in 2002. Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland is set to release on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC (via Steam) and Nintendo Switch sometime in March and promises to be lots of fun.
