Unreleased GoldeneEye 007 making-of documentary meant for 2015’s Rare Replay compilation is available to view online.

Goldeneye 007 is making plenty of headlines with its recent release on Xbox and Nintendo Switch. Reception has been positive, and it’s terrific that both long-time fans and newcomers get to enjoy this N64 classic on modern hardware.

Game development was very different in 1997, and the story of how Goldeneye 007 came to be is almost as captivating as the game itself! A video surfaced online 3 years ago documenting the game’s development, and it’s just as important now as it was back then. It was intended to be used in 2015’s Rare Replay, but this sadly never happened.

This incredible video tells tales of how Goldeneye 007 was originally destined to be an on-rails shooter, like Time Crisis. The genre changed after audiences at a Japanese gaming convention saw gameplay footage and assumed it was a first-person shooter.

The developers reminisce about working around the N64’s hardware limitations and how primitive the Mocap technology was. They also explain that many of the guards’ pixellated faces are, in fact, members of the dev team! The video explains the origins of the famous Judo chop (it was easier to make an open hand than a closed one!) and much more.

The team looks back on Goldeneye‘s development fondly, and it’s a heartwarming takeaway from the video. If you want to watch for yourself (and I highly recommend you do), you can check it out above.
