With the Nintendo Switch slowly becoming the standalone Nintendo library powerhouse, especially now that N64 titles will be joining the NSO Expansion Pack, we’re seeing many iconic games make a return much to the delight of many retro gamers.

GoldenEye 007 is certainly one of those games. Rare’s beloved first-person shooter will be coming soon to the N64 collection of games for the Switch, Xbox Game Pass and Rare Replay with small improvements included. However, this project was almost going to be undertaken by Shadow Man developer, Nightdive Studios until it was leaked and cancelled last year. A tweet from CEO, Stephen Kick following the Nintendo Direct announced of the game states:

“We @NightdiveStudio came *this* close to doing this, but ultimately I’m thrilled to see GoldenEye returning to modern platforms and more thrilled that @RareLtd is the studio to bring it back”.

No further details were shared regarding these circumstances but the studio are underway with other projects like the remake of 1994’s System Shock and Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition in collaboration with Apogee Entertainment and New Blood Entertainment. Sadly, Nintendo have not taken them up on their motivation to remake titles such as 2002’s Eternal Darkness. We can only wait to see if these games will hopefully get a flashy new reveal.
