Evercade has just rolled out a fantastic new feature with its latest firmware update for the EXP, EXP-R, VS, VSR, and Alpha consoles: customizable dip switch settings for arcade games!

This much-requested feature means you can now tweak classic arcade titles to your liking, adjusting difficulty levels, number of lives, and more, bringing a whole new level of personalization to your retro gaming experience.

What are dip switches?

For those unfamiliar, dip switches are small switches found on arcade circuit boards that operators used to configure game settings. Evercade is now bringing this functionality to your fingertips, allowing you to fine-tune your favorite arcade classics.

How to access dip switch settings:

  1. Navigate to the Game Information Page: Select the arcade game you want to customize.
  2. Select the Ellipses Icon: Look for the three dots (ellipses) icon and select it.
  3. Choose “Dip Switch Settings”: If the game supports dip switch settings, you’ll see this option in the menu.

Important Notes:

  • If the “Dip Switch Settings” option isn’t available, the game doesn’t support it at this time.
  • Different games offer different dip switch settings. Examples include:
    • Alcon (Toaplan Arcade 1): Adjust lives per credit, score boundaries for extra lives, and overall difficulty.
    • Rodland (Jaleco Arcade 1): Choose lives per credit (including infinite lives!), starting episode, and difficulty.
    • Sy Battler (Jaleco Arcade 1): Toggle continue options.
  • CPS2 Games: Games that originally ran on Capcom’s CPS2 hardware (like some Capcom arcade titles) use a different system for game settings. Evercade plans to add support for customizing these settings in a future update.
  • Visual Indication: If you’ve applied custom dip switch settings, the game information page will display this above the game description.
  • Resetting to Defaults: To reset all dip switches to their default values, open the dip switch settings page and press the Y button on your controller. Confirm your decision following the on-screen prompts. Competition mode will also reset dip switches to their default settings.
