Fancy a Quake 2 Remaster to bring the greatest LAN multiplayer deathmatch arena bang up to date?
The legendary Quake 2 is getting remastered, at least, according to the South Korean Game Rating and Administration Committee (GRAC). The GRAC is a governmental organization that rates games to inform customers of the nature of their content. If you’re familiar with ESRB ratings, it’s similar to that.
The GRAC has a history of leaking games before the public are meant to know about them. Funnily enough, they did the same for the first Quake Remaster. More recently, the GRAC has leaked other titles like the Grand Theft Auto Definitive Edition and even a Lego football game.
Quake has a large enough following that it has its own yearly convention. QuakeCon is returning to live events this year after several digital-only presentations, with the next scheduled in August. It’s speculation, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Quake 2 Remastered announcement were meant to be revealed there.
We’ve covered Quake numerous times in the past, including an ambitious mod project that adds RayTracing to the original. I love projects like this, and it’s hard not to appreciate the lengths fans will go to for their favourite games. It’s different when it’s an official project, as the developers are free to do anything they want without licensing issues.
Ultimately, with the rights to Quake 2, the remaster could be a celebration of an FPS classic or a lazy port. I’m hoping it’s the former.
