Few gaming franchises on the planet can boast a legacy like Space Invaders, and the series has just celebrated its 45th anniversary. To mark the occasion, Taito and Square Enix have teamed up with Google to bring us Space Invaders: World Defence.
This title is strictly for mobile platforms and uses AR technology, much like the phenomenally successful Pokemon GO. Reviews on the Google Play Store are mixed, and it seems like the title has had a buggy launch leaving many unable to play. Hopefully, this gets fixed soon.
The trailer is pretty cheesy, but that’s par for the course for AR Mobile marketing. Unfortunately, the trailer doesn’t show any gameplay, but from what I’ve seen, it looks fun if you’re into these types of games.
Although I love retro games, I am quite partial to AR Mobile games like Pokemon GO. Unfortunately, almost every AR title I’ve enjoyed has been promptly shut down due to waning interest and a low player count.
Does this legendary title have the star power to thrive in the same market where The Witcher and Harry Potter have failed? I’m unconvinced, but I’d love to be proved wrong.
Space Invaders: World Defense is available on the Google Play Store for Android and the App Store for iPhone/iPad and is a free-to-play title. Celebrate 45 years of Space Invaders in style!
