SuperSPGA (formerly SuperSEGA) front man Alejandro has dropped a bombshell in a new video, revealing plans for a new, budget-friendly Sega-compatible mini console.
No, really, they’re still at it.
But after the rocky launch and subsequent refunds of the original Super Sega, can they regain the community’s trust?
In a candid YouTube update, Alejandro detailed the vision for this new console, aiming to right the wrongs of the past. “We have decided through a manufacturer that we are negotiating with, an Asian one, a console much more economical, in the order of 200 250,” he announced. This significantly lower price point is a direct response to the criticism surrounding the original console’s steep cost, and reiterates SuperSega Team’s earlier claim of “dealing with popular mass producers.”
FPGA, emulation, and open source?
What’s even more intriguing is the promised open-source nature of the device. Leveraging a chip similar to an FPGA, the new Super Mini (no longer “Super Consola“) will support both FPGA and emulation, allowing users to tinker with the hardware and develop their own cores.
If true, this is a game-changer for the retro community, offering unprecedented customization and potential.
“The target price, the objective, will be to get those 10 20 prototype units and be able to send them to 10 20 popular YouTubers,” Alejandro stated. This move is clearly designed to build transparency and demonstrate the console’s capabilities to a wider audience, something previous attempts struggled with. (Although a striking number of YouTubers went along with it…)
If successful, it could go a long way in rebuilding the trust lost during the original launch fiasco.
Of course, the elephant in the room is the refund process. Alejandro addressed this head-on, assuring viewers that “We have returned almost all the money, about 10 people have not recovered it yet.” For those still waiting, he provided his personal WhatsApp number in the video, urging them to reach out directly.
SuperSEGA Mini cartridge compatibility
Like the original attempt, the console will feature cartridge slots for classic Sega systems, including the Master System, Mega Drive, and SG-1000, promising a truly authentic retro experience. Although how a “mini” console has space for 3 cartridge interfaces is another matter entirely…
Alejandro did state that “amigos esto es verdad y sigue hacia adelante” meaning “friends this is true and continues forward” which some may find hard to believe.
Can this new Super Mini console deliver on its promises? Will the open-source nature and affordable price point be enough to win back the retro gaming community? Only time will tell. But one thing’s for sure: Alejandro’s latest announcement has certainly sparked a conversation.
