On September 13 Nintendo presented a direct, showcasing new and upcoming games, most were disappointed with what was featured but the highlight for many was the announcement of GoldenEye 007 being ported onto their N64 emulator on the Nintendo Switch.
Rare, the developers of this iconic game have spoken on its return being long in the works with their boss Craig Duncan stating “to be honest, it took us longer than we wanted to.” with the key issue being licensing for the game.
They revealed they tried to get it onto the Rare Replay in 2015, a collection of Rare games developed for Xbox One released in a bundle for their 30th year anniversary.
Duncan said that they held “lots of conversations with our friends at Nintendo, the folks at MGM, the folks at Xbox, and we just kept talking until we made it happen. We made it happen, so I’m proud of that.”
The game originally released on the N64 in 1997, and is based on the James Bond film released two years prior.
The game is a first person shooter, where you play as the main protagonist of the films, 007 himself.
It will have single player and multiplayer modes so those using the N64 emulator when released with a friend will be able to play this online thanks to Nintendos co-op feature on their emulation services.
The game is highly popular and an icon of its time, receiving a 9.0 rating on Metacritic.
The iconic James Bond game will be available on the N64 emulator released with the Nintendo Online expansion pass released last year.
It will also be available on Xbox and those with Xbox Game Pass will have access to it as soon as it is released.
