Kitsune Zero is an all new 2D platformer game and is one to look out for if you are a fan of the original Super Mario Bros games.

Kitsune Zero released on Steam on September 12 for a low price of £3.99 as a DLC to Super Bernie World.

In this you can play as a ‘cute fox girl’ named Yumi attempting to defeat a samurai ghost clan through stages which look all too similar to those of the original Super Mario Bros games released in 1983.

From green grass lands with happy clouds in the background, to dark castle levels that appear more challenging, it would be hard not to recognise these similarities, Mario fan or not.

On top of this you are able to gain power-ups such as fireballs, growth in size and of course invincibility, to knock out or stomp on your enemies.

One thing that is a good addition to this game is the Japanese folklore included with many enemies being based off of it such as the Samurai warriors and many bosses however you will still encounter creatures with Koopa and Goomba like characteristics and artistic style, to help the game relate more back to the game it was inspired by.

Regardless, this game should be treated as a tribute act to Super Mario Bros as its modern take on one of the greatest retro games of all time rather than a copy.

Its own story line, a female protagonist and enemies will appeal more to some, and of course new levels, music and more make this worth looking at.

The artistic style is beautiful and classic, an aesthetic ode to Super Mario Bros and all 2D platformer games.

The game is a prequel to Kitsune Tails which is set to release in 2023 with a more individual Japanese based aesthetic to its levels, but Kitsune Zero would be the place to begin your adventure in this series if you are interested.

Overall Kitsune Tails looks to be a smooth running, most importantly fun game and a unique and enjoyable twist of its inspiration.
