New Indie 2.5D Platformer “Pad of Time” Launches on Nintendo Wii U’s Final Year Alive

2022 Wii U owners need love, too.

Indie developer Markanime Studios – with Nintendo’s blessing – published a new game called Pad of Time to the Nintendo network. However, to many gamers’ surprise, they have issued a version of it on the Wii U.

Captain U,  a quirky, retro-style platformer developed by Ultra Dolphin Revolution, dropped on Nintendo’s last-gen console on December 29, 2021, a few months shy of a year before Wii U owners will kiss their eShops goodbye forever, according to Nintendo’s announcement regarding their May 2023 Wii U and 3DS eShop shutdown.

Wii U hopefuls came to terms with Captain U being potentially the last new game to come to the Wii’s successor. However, Markanime Studios decided to share its graces on the Gamepad along with the Nintendo Switch. Now, Wii U players have something new to play to send off what could potentially be the last “new” purchase on the Wii U’s eShop.

According to Nintendo Life, several dates slowly countdown the end of the eShop. May 23rd, 2022, a little over a month away (at the creation of this post), is the last time funds can be added to the eShop via credit cards. Following that date comes the cessation of Nintendo eShop gift card functionality, which will start on the 29th of August this year.

Wii U owners can still redeem game download codes through March of 2023 when the eShop officially closes. (This all goes for the 3DS, as well.) It appears Sony isn’t the only video game company challenging video game preservation.

Those dates were announced a while ago, but it’s important to note that if you haven’t purchased Pad of Time on the Wii U by now, there isn’t much time left. The developers seem to have been heavily inspired by greats like Paper Mario and some of the Sonic franchise.

There are creative mechanics, and there’s even time travel in this game. Unfortunately, those time powers can’t slow down the impending doom of the Wii U’s eShop.

You can grab Pad of Time on the Nintendo eShop for the Wii U for just £6.29.
